United for Sunol Glen is a dedicated group of parents and community members who have launched a grassroots effort to repair, protect and heal Sunol Glen Unified School District.
The organization formed over many months in response to a shared loss of trust in and deep concern about the actions and behavior of SGUSD School Board Trustees Jergensen and Hurley. Sunolians, parents, teachers, and the greater Sunol Glen School community organically found each other and have come together as one Sunol, united to protect our beloved school community, restore normalcy, and get back to the peaceful and respected Sunol gem we know our school can be.
The official Committee, Recall School Board Trustees Jergensen & Hurley, is a team of long-time, respected Sunolians working alongside parents of students at Sunol Glen School. We are all community members and stakeholders who care deeply about our school.
Neil Davies has been a Sunol resident for over 50 years. He served as a Sunol Glen USD Board Member for 12 years and, as a strong proponent of good governance, he created and developed the SGUSD Board Member Handbook and self-evaluation process. Neil is a co-founder of Save Our Sunol (dedicated to maintaining the rural nature of Sunol), an MIT grad and past judge of Sunol Glen School science fairs. When he’s not busy working as a Subject Matter Expert to NASA Ames Research Center, Moffett Field, he can often be found volunteering on projects for the Sunol Business Guild.
Margaret "Peggy" Carpenter is a 42 year resident of Sunol who served as a Sunol Glen USD Board Member for 7 years. She was the 6th grade teacher at Sunol Glen School for 10 years where she was also a parent volunteer for her three children, a member of the Community Club and served on the School Site Council. During the summers, she organized and ran a program for swim lessons and lifeguarding for the children of Sunol. Peggy was a Co-Chair of the Ridge Referendum Committee, which protected the ridgelands that, eventually through the initiative process, became Pleasanton Ridge Regional Park that sits above the beautiful town of Sunol.
Guin Van Dyke has been a Sunol resident for more than 28 years. Her family was drawn to the area for the rural atmosphere and the highly respected school. She served the community as a Sunol Glen USD Board Member for 10 years. She’s also been active in the Community over the years through Sunol Repertory Theatre, Sunol Business Guild and Sunol 4-H. Guin’s 2 children attended Sunol Glen and during their time at the school she volunteered in their classrooms, and was a very active member of the Community Club, which recognized her as Volunteer of the Year.
Matthew Sylvester has been a Sunol resident for 10 years. He owns and operates a successful vegetable farm in Sunol and regularly donates his delicious produce and nursery starts to the community, Sunol Glen School staff, and the school garden program. Matt has a child who attends Sunol Glen School where he enjoys volunteering in Dillon’s garden as well as chaperoning field trips.
Chris Bobertz is a Sunol resident of 5 years and a devoted father of 2 kids at Sunol Glen with another child joining the school soon. He is actively engaged in the Sunol community and when he isn’t fixing or building something in Dillon’s Garden, you can often find him doing the same at the Sunol Depot Garden and Community Park. Having run for a seat on the Sunol Glen Unified School District Board, he remains dedicated to fostering a thriving Sunol Glen School.
Erin Choin has been a parent of children at Sunol Glen School for five years and loved the community and area so much that her family moved to Sunol last year. With an academic background in Early Childhood Education, she puts her knowledge to use as a full time parent, active volunteer, and substitute teacher at Sunol Glen. She is a member of the Community Club and coordinated the Earth Day event this year. Volunteering at the school garden gives Erin a way to share her love of gardening with children. When inside the classrooms as a volunteer, Erin assists children practicing reading and she plays her guitar and sings along with the preschool.
Rebecca Radulovich (Mrs. Rad) of Alamo is a retired Sunol Glen School teacher who began teaching at SGS in 1976 and has taught nearly every grade in addition to serving as the school Resource Specialist. She was instrumental in getting Sunol Glen recognized as a Distinguished School in 1985 and many of the programs and traditions she initiated continue at the school today including the 8th grade Washington DC trip, the graduation multimedia presentation and a visual-spatial math curriculum. She has served as a mentor teacher, student teacher advisor, student council, yearbook, cheerleader, intramural sports advisor, reading adoption coordinator, math adoption coordinator and grade level curriculum leader. She has been awarded Teacher of the Year under four superintendents and in the year 2000 she was named Alameda County Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Rad retired in 2010 and has remained connected to the Sunol Glen School staff and community.
Diana LaVigne of Fremont is a parent of a Sunol Glen student who regularly volunteers at Sunol Glen School functions and within her children's classrooms. She has organized a Sunol Glen community camping trip and regularly attends Community Club meetings. Additionally, she is involved in the Sunol Repertory Theatre as House Manager and supports their marketing efforts with her 3 decades of experience as an award-winning communications professional. Diana also sits on the board of the Association of Environmental and Outdoor Educators and on the conference committee for UC Berkeley's California Naturalist.
Kelly Goldsmith of Fremont is a parent of a Sunol Glen student. She is a Nilesian who has resided near the mouth of the Canyon for over 20 years and has a strong affinity for the nearby town of Sunol. Kelly thoughtfully chose Sunol Glen for her family primarily out of a desire to become a part of the close-knit and thriving school community. She enjoys volunteering in her child’s classroom whenever the opportunity arises and as an avid outdoorswoman and amateur naturalist, is especially fond of supporting outdoor education in Dillon’s Garden.
